Robins Kaplan LLP, a national litigation law firm, has an exciting opportunity in our Minneapolis location for a talented individual to join our senior leadership team. The Chief Talent Officer (CTO), together with the COO and leadership team, will provide strategic and visionary leadership for Robins Kaplan.

This position reports to the Chief Operating Officer and will be the chief architect of all human resource policies and practices across the Firm to foster a healthy, vibrant and equitable work environment. The position leads the HR function that services approximately 600 employees. Specific areas of responsibility include workforce inclusion & diversity, recruitment, employee engagement, compensation, benefit administration, employee relations and counseling, labor relations, performance management, HRIS, training and professional development, staff management, organizational design, HR budgetary management, development of policies and procedures, oversight of all technical aspects of departmental operations, and employment law compliance as related to Human Resources.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and lead an innovative HR function. Provide HR vision, short & long-term planning, as well as progressive human resources strategies to continue to build capacity within the HR function and the broader organization, develop a strong talent pipeline, and maximize organizational development and performance.
  • Build, manage, and motivate a high performing, impactful HR team to meet and exceed organization and departmental goals and objectives.
  • Serve as a strategic partner to the senior leadership team in the development of Firm plans and programs to advise on the potential impact on people, processes, resources, and logistics.
  • Develop and implement short and long-range programs and initiatives to drive organizational effectiveness, professional development, and overall management and performance of employees in order to support Firm goals.
  • Continually assess the competitiveness and equity of all programs and practices across our national offices and against relevant companies, industries, regions, and markets. Actively engage in the legal community to be an innovator and thought leader in all substantive areas of the role.
  • Anticipate and plan for long-term human resource needs and trends in partnership with business management process across the Firm.
  • Extract and share relevant insights to coach and empower managers to positively influence and impact workplace culture in alignment with our Firm values.
  • Serve as the Board liaison to advise and consult on cross-functional policies, processes, and facilitate relevant internal communication to employees, managers, and departments in all offices.
  • Advise on staff and attorney compensation matters and serve as a staff liaison to the Board.
  • Develop, implement and maintain an ongoing performance management process that aligns with the Firm’s goals.
  • Lead efforts to ensure competitive and equitable compensation and benefits programs that enable the Firm to attract, retain and engage top talent.
  • Supervise employee orientation and training programs that address Firm needs and long-term strategic goals.
  • Define workplace strategies and initiatives to enhance culture and engagement of employees.
  • Partner with senior leadership team to advise on and manage salary and benefits budget appropriately.




Our Ideal Candidate Has:

  • Strong execution-bias in order to make progress and push forward the HR agenda.
  • A proven track record of delivering in an operations role.
  • Data analysis skills, in order to use data and facts to prepare and develop materials and to support recommendations that are grounded in facts.
  • Experience in working in a fast-paced environment, able to make quick decisions with good judgement.
  • The ability to identify key issues or potential roadblocks in advance and to flag these for senior leadership team.
  • Experience in working with senior leaders and executives with tact and diplomacy, often on sensitive, people-related topics.
  • Ability to lead and manage direct reports and to provide informal local mentorship and support to other team members.
  • Knowledgeable in all aspects of change management and ability to demonstrate strong team management and thought leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in handling sensitive employment data in a confidential and appropriate manner.
  • A deep understanding of the key business drivers and how the organization's people influence them. 
  • Ability to ensure the Firm culture is supportive of the business and working throughout the organization to promote and support the culture.
  • Strategically drive workforce analytics and data.

 Minimum Skills and/or Knowledge Required:

  • Strong experience in all core areas of HR with added emphasis in talent management, general HR, organizational design, change management, and demonstrated capability building HR function.
  • A seasoned, visionary HR executive with demonstrated experience building HR strategy and driving progressive HR practices and execution.
  • Strong critical thinking, communication, and facilitation skills; articulate speaking skills.
  • Demonstrated success influencing and collaborating with senior leadership.
  • Strong recruiter and assessor of talent.
  • Solid metrics, analytics and financial acumen.


  • Minimum of 12-15 years of progressive experience as a senior human resources leader.
  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, management or related field required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Senior level HR certification preferred.
