About FirstLine Schools


In 1998, FirstLine Schools started the first charter school in New Orleans. FirstLine now operates four K-8th grade schools and a high school.   Our mission is to create and inspire great open admissions public schools in New Orleans. We do this by:

Position Summary:


The Director of Human Resources is directly responsible for the overall administration, coordination and evaluation of an effective and efficient human resources team at FirstLine schools.  Supports, leads, and manages an HR team who exhibits the FirstLine values and is committed to providing efficient and effective services so that employees can be their best.


Position Responsibilities:




  • Develops, implements, reviews and refines the network process for onboarding employees

  • Develops, implements, reviews, and refines the background check process for employees, sub-consultants, contractors, and volunteers; Ensures quality control and compliance

  • Supports HR team to ensure there are robust processes for tracking new hires

  • Ensures collaboration between HR and other departments for the onboarding of new employees

  • As needed, approves background checks.  Communicates with outside entities on background data provided.    

  • Collaborates with Talent team to ensure a smooth transition for the new employee.


Employee Services/Benefits


  • Answers employee HR questions; Follows up on complex issues or questions

  • Continuously evaluate, review, and approve HR vendors and services

  • Collaborates and consults with Talent to support promotions and role changes; includes determining appropriate compensation and creating appropriate offer letters for current employees

  • Manages the Workers Compensation, FMLA, STD, COBRA, and LTD processes.  Makes determination of leave eligibility and ensures proper communication.  Works with HR Team and Payroll to ensure employee has accurate information; Manages the requirements of the Affordable Care Act ensuring compliance

  • Provides guidance to benefit carriers, Payroll, and HR team to ensure appropriate procedures

  • Oversees benefits administration system to ensure additions, changes and cancellations are all processed; Organizes Open Enrollment processes from planning to execution to ensure great service and error-free process

  • Continually improves organizations’ understanding of and communication regarding benefit plans and wellness initiatives

  • Provides solutions for employees about certification requirements for instructional and non-instructional employees; analyzes the State law and interprets the law based on the employee’s situation.

  • Manages wellness programming and budget

  • Approves employee changes such as name change and communicates with other departments about the employee change

  • Back-up to HR Specialist for HR Hours  


Employee Files and Records


  • Develops, implements, reviews, and refines employee file policy; ensures proper filing system

  • Oversees the execution of consistent complete personnel files including periodic audits

  • Conducts quarterly internal file, employee, benefit, and system audits.

  • Proactively seeks information about legal requirements and provides guidance to team based on the requirements.

  • Works with the Data and Compliance team to provide HR data for state reporting

  • Recommends system improvements and collaborates with the team to improve current systems

  • Stays current on the Record Retention Policy

  • Collaborates with the team to improve work processes and systems

  • Maintains staff information such as demographics, salary data, etc in the Human Resource Information System (FLS Database)

  • Prepares presentations on HR data

  • Serves as Title IX manager at FirstLine Schools


Data/Information Systems


  • In collaboration with the HR Specialist, updates the HR internal online portal.  Approves all changes made to the HR internal online portal.

  • Works with benefit vendors to ensure benefit systems are working and being best utilized

  • Collaborates with TM/HR/Payroll teams to improve systems and information management.


Department Operations, Strategy and Policy


  • Provides support for document development, archive development, long term planning, and continual improvement of department

  • Trains and provides training to HR/Talent staff for learning and professional development.

  • In collaboration with the Director of Talent, oversees yearly compensation analysis

  • Develop tools and guidance in order to limit legal liability in all employment practices

  • Ensures FirstLine policies are up-to-date, continuously reviewed, and that staff are well educated regarding these policies.

  • In collaboration with the Communications team, ensures proper communication about benefits and other HR-related information.

  • Works with the COO to develop processes to ensure business continuity and adequate staffing

  • Leads succession planning for the organization and the identification of internal candidates


Employee Relations


  • Manages employee relations and gives counsel to managers on how to resolve employee situations with empathy (after hours phone calls and early mornings can be expected)

  • With the COO and Director of Talent, lead and manage performance evaluations process and talent appraisal at the central network office

  • Oversee, and on many occasions lead, investigations into staff concerns and complaints



  • Communicates with appropriate departments of separation.

  • Manages the involuntary separation process.

  • Approves exit paperwork.


Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:


  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear

  • Light lifting of equipment may be required (up to 20 lbs.)


Director of Human Resources reports to: Chief Operating Officer

Education & Experience:


  • Bachelor’s degree, master’s preferred; HR Certification preferred.

  • Minimum 5 years of Human Resources experience in an office setting

  • Knowledge in HR Law, state law, ACA, and other compliance

  • Demonstrated success in managing stakeholders and working on a team

  • High-level of proficiency with information technology, including excel and database software

  • Experience with collecting, manipulating and analyzing data to create reports and presentations

  • Experience with HR and benefits systems

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to represent the organization to a variety of audiences
