The Position
The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit whose scientists and engineers work to solve some of our planet’s most pressing environmental and safety problems. UCS combines technical analysis and effective organizing and advocacy to create innovative, practical solutions for stemming the tide of global warming, sustainable food policy and agriculture, energy and transportation, fighting misinformation and reducing the threat of catastrophic nuclear war.

The HR Generalist supports all aspects of human resources at UCS with a focus on recruitment, hiring, onboarding, benefits, diversity and inclusion, and employee relations.

As HR Generalist, you’ll manage a variety of human resources responsibilities, troubleshoot challenges, and ensure compliance with policies and standard procedures. Responsibilities

Recruitment and Hiring (in coordination with HR partners):

  • Help refine and implement UCS’s recruitment systems and practices. Research and refine strategies and processes to attract a diverse pool of highly qualified applicants.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with professional organizations, colleges and universities, foundations and institutions, and other audiences as appropriate.
  • Manage the application system, maintain best practices for applicant communication, and applicant reporting systems.
  • Provide interview and hiring process support and coaching to hiring managers.

 

General HR

  • Support Director in working with benefits administration and payroll; help communicate policies and benefits to staff.
  • Acquire expertise and knowledge of employee benefits to help DC staff with questions and troubleshooting.
  • Keep current on employment law including FMLA, FLSA, ADA, ADEA.
  • Collaborate to ensure human resources operations are running smoothly and with excellence.
  • Keep aware of the wide range of issues affecting employee retention and communicate these to Director of Human Resources.
  • Assist with training coordination, organizing training scheduling, and HR event planning logistics.
  • Assist in managing relationships with temp agencies; liaison between supervisors and temp agencies.
  • Work with HR Partners on internship program excellence and develop a simple mentorship program.
  • Conduct exit interviews with departing staff and orientations to UCS policies, procedures, and benefit programs for new staff with HR Partners.
  • Handle, respect, maintain, and safeguard confidential data.
  • Mindfully create an environment that is supportive and inclusive of all employees by providing excellent customer service.

Compensation, Hours and Location: This is a full-time position based in UCS’s Washington, DC office. For those who meet all position requirements, the salary is around $66,500. Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills are needed. Ability to work both in a team-based environment as well as act independently is necessary. Must have superior communication skills; both written and oral. HR certification and/or degree majoring in Human Resources or related field preferred. Considerable self-motivation and knowledge of office and administrative support procedures. Sound knowledge and interest in HR legal concepts, good judgment, excellent personal relation skills required. Strong attention to detail and overall commitment to accuracy and confidentiality.

At least five to seven years of comparable and relevant experience in recruiting, employee relations, conflict management, and human resources administration is required. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple projects and responsibilities and to be flexible in responding to fast-changing organization needs. 

Little or no physical exertion; may require extended periods at a computer. Some late hours and/or weekends may be required in connection with events or critical deadlines. Light overnight travel to headquarters – approximately 3 times a year.

At UCS, comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.
