The City of Tacoma Human Resources Department seeks outstanding candidates for the position of Assistant Human Resources Director, serving Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU). The successful candidate will be a key member of the Human Resources (HR) leadership team and will serve as a strategic business partner and advisor, managing a broad range of human resources functions and support activities specific to TPU.


This position will lead a team of three Human Resources professionals at TPU who, with general government counterparts, support approximately 1,400 employees at TPU.  You will have an opportunity to engage stakeholders and leverage your experience and training to grow the HR team to provide a greater suite of HR business solutions in support of TPU providing services to its rate payers.   

As the Assistant Human Resources Director you will:

  • Direct and execute the operations of the Talent Services division at TPU, supervising and evaluating assigned personnel and partnering with TPU and HR leaders to develop and implement human resources strategies and solutions that strengthen the organization as a whole.  
  • Oversee and deliver human resources functions that have a direct impact on and align with business goals and strategies of HR and TPU.  These areas include, but are not limited to workforce planning, recruitment, selection and hiring and outreach; organization design, performance management, human resources metrics, organization development, employee engagement and recognition, and diversity and inclusion.
  • Build and develop leadership capability across all levels of the organization by providing coaching, advice, tools, and resources to leaders to effectively manage people. Advise leaders on organizational structure and align activities with talent.  Drive uniform best practices and use of data-driven decision making.  

Requirements

The most competitive applicants will be dynamic leaders who have:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline from an accredited college or university;
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience leading and coaching staff;
  • A minimum of 8 years of increasingly responsible experience in multiple HR disciplines, including deep expertise in one or more HR disciplines;
  • Experience coaching leaders at all levels;
  • SPHR, SHRM-SCP, or comparable certification desirable;
  • Experience in a government and union-represented and/or utility environment highly preferred.
