Job Details:

As a member of the of the Human Resources Talent Acquisition team, the Manager of Student Employment will have primary responsibility for leadership of the Student Employment function.  This person will assess, advise, and align the Student Employment model with appropriate best practices as it relates to Talent Acquisition, with a focus on continuous improvement. The Manager of Student Employment will advise on policy issues and assist with various Human Resources functions; he/she will collaborate with Student Financial Services to ensure that the Federal Work Study program is administered in conjunction with federal requirements, and ensure that all student employees are hired in accord with federal and state requirements. The Manager of Student Employment will ensure that job openings are appropriately posted and that student employees are properly onboarded. The Manager of Student Employment will interface with multiple levels of management across the university. This person supervises the Student Employment staff/ student employees and oversees the Student Employment Office.

Requirements

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

 

Required Experience

  • Four to six years of human resources experience.  Two to three years of management experience.  Experience in a university setting and/or with student employment preferred. 
  • Thorough hands-on knowledge of key employment-related areas, including hiring best practices, discrimination, progressive discipline, wage and hour law, and training and development.
  • Experience with California employment law highly desirable.

 

Primary Duties/Essential Functions

  • Provides strategic leadership to the student employment office; implement and continuously refine systems and best practices.
  • Responsibility for all matters related to student employment, including hiring practices, employee relations, policies and procedures, and applicable federal and state laws.
  • Ensures that the process of hiring student employees is in compliance with federal and state laws and university policies.
  • Organizes the workflow of the student employment office, utilizing various technologies to ensure work is processed in a timely way and records are stored appropriately.
  • Works with the HRIS team to ensure accurate records are kept in the HR database in PeopleSoft.
  • Identifies key student employment issues in keeping with the university’s strategic initiatives and initiates actions to resolve outstanding issues.
  • Collaborates with other HR team members in implementing and monitoring university employment policies.
  • Collaborates with Student Financial Services in ensuring that the Federal Work Study program is administered in accordance with federal requirements, including monitoring of FWS earnings for students. 
  • Maintains the student employee handbook and ensures it is current with relevant laws and other university policies. 
  • Develops processes and systems that support and develop the efficient operation of the student employment function and effective customer service to hiring departments and student employees. 
  • Ensures that student positions on campus have accurate job descriptions in place.
  • Provides training for supervisors on campus to educate them on student employment policies and proper supervision techniques.
  • Works with Payroll and other offices as needed to ensure that time records for student employees are being kept accurately and that students are being paid the appropriate amounts and in a timely way.
  • Serves as a resource to supervisors across the university on a variety of matters related to the employment of students.
  • Ensures student employment positions are properly coded in accordance with worker’s compensation guidelines.
  • Responsible for the recruitment process for student employees, working with departments to make sure open positions are posted for students to view. 
  • Supervises the student employment staff and oversees the student employment office.
  • Performs related duties and special HR projects as assigned by the Assistant Director of Talent Acquisition.
