Rewards Manager (Compensation & Benefits)


The Rewards (Compensation & Benefits) Manager is accountable for the administration of all compensation and employee benefits programs and processes in the US. This position provides special guidance and assistance to all locations regarding various employee benefit plans and compensation programs and services. In addition, the manager provides input to, recommends, and implements approved new or modified compensation programs/ benefit plans and policies, and supervise all administration. This position serves as an active team member in the Volvo Group HR Services - Human Resource Service Center (HRSC), as well as in the HR Management Team, participating in strategic planning, priority setting, resource utilization, and process improvement activities.   The Rewards (Compensation & Benefits) Manager drives continuous improvements for all related processes in cooperation with the VPS Coordinator.
Core Responsibilities
Manages all reward processes and programs that include:
Benefits – 75%

  • Retirement plans; 401k plans, medical, vision and dental plans, term life insurance; short- and long-term disability programs; accidental death policies; cafeteria plans, Medicare Part D compliance, and profit sharing

Compensation (& Relocation) – 25%

  • Annual salary review (merit), job evaluation/market pricing/benchmarking, survey participation, Variable Salary Plans (VSP), International Position evaluation (IPE), Deferred compensation, Relocation Programs (Domestic, Foreign Local Hire, Group Moves)


  • Supports and consults with US HR Center of Expertise (CoE) in the development and implementation of the compensation & benefits strategy, policy and program development
  • Implements new compensation & benefit programs, processes and policies
  • Identifies and implements process improvements in cooperation with the VPS Program Coordinator
  • Escalates suggestions for policy/program changes to the US HR CoE to resolve complex cases
  • Participates in the evaluation and comparison of existing company benefits with those of other employers by analyzing other plans, surveys, and other sources of information to ensure competitive and cost-effective benefits programs
  • Manages relationships and contracts with outside service providers to administer and deliver required programs Supports and recommends the selection of operating vendors
  • Maintains expertise in compensation & benefits administration; keeps informed of developments and trends
  • Manages benefit enrollment, eligibility, records and conduct audits for accuracy
  • Provides benefit information to support actuarial and business reporting
  • Ensures that compensation & benefit practices, programs, and processes are in compliance with all federal and state requirements (i.e.: DOL, ERISA, FMLA, COBRA) and participates in internal compensation & benefits committees
  • Directs the preparation and distribution of written and verbal communication to inform employees of compensation & benefits programs and policies
  • Utilizes operational Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and other measurements to drive continuous improvements in compensation & benefits processes
  • Develops, motivates, and coaches the compensation & benefits team

  • Basic business and accounting principles
  • MS Office proficiency and good understanding of the role of IT in supporting HR processes

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources or Business, or the equivalent combination of directly related education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
  • 10 or more years of relevant and demonstrated compensation & benefits administration experience with significant staff management responsibilities
  • At least 5 years of experience in a position where the responsibilities included significant and successful conflict and problem resolution experience, as well as the clarification of policies and guidelines, is preferred
  • Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) and/or Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) certification is preferred
  • Willingness to work hands-on with team when necessary
  • Senior Professional Human Resources (SPHR or PHR) designation is a plus
  • A working and demonstrated knowledge of corporate relocation program and associated vendor management is required
