Associate Director, Labor and Employee Relations

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (LCPA), one of Lincoln Center’s eleven resident organizations, serves a unique role on the Lincoln Center campus, serving as the landlord of the sprawling 16-acre complex, overseeing day-to-day operations, security, and maintenance. This also includes the management of major construction and renovation projects, space rentals, and coordination of outdoor public events.

LCPA is also a leading arts presenter, showcasing a dynamic array of music, dance, and theatre on its stages, curating the American Songbook, Great Performers, Mostly Mozart Festival, Midsummer Night Swing, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, White Light Festival, and David Rubenstein Atrium series as well as overseeing production for the PBS series, Live From Lincoln Center.

Lastly, Lincoln Center Education (LCE), which is part of the LCPA umbrella, strives to help young people in New York develop skills in problem solving, collaboration, communication, imagination, and creativity through their engagement with the arts. In doing so, LCE works to develop teaching artists and oversees community, family, and school programming across the boroughs of New York City.

Reporting to the Chief People Officer, this position has primary responsibility for the day-to-day management of the labor and employee relations function for Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (LCPA). The Associate Director provides guidance on human resources policies and regulatory compliance concerning the employment relationship with both union-represented and non-represented staff and manages other human resources functions as needed. The Associate Director is the primary representative for the organization in collective bargaining. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Manage all aspects of labor relations with union-represented personnel, including negotiation and administration of 15+ collective bargaining agreements covering 300+ union-represented employees.
  • Serve as the chief negotiator in collective bargaining involving the majority of the organization’s bargaining units.
  • Manage confidential employee relations issues involving both represented and non-represented staff, including employment-related investigations, complaints and conflicts, performance management, disciplinary actions, etc.
  • Represent Lincoln Center management in grievance, discipline, and termination hearings, arbitrations, unemployment insurance and other types of employment hearings and proceedings.
  • Provide support, guidance, consultation and policy/procedures clarification to management and employees on a wide range of labor and employee relations matters.
  • Identify issues and recommend appropriate actions to correct any labor or employee relations problems and concerns.
  • Work with department head and legal department to research and interpret employment laws.
  • Develop, implement, administer and communicate human resources policies and procedures consistent with policy, laws, and regulations.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with labor organizations representing Lincoln Center employees. Build and foster relationships and works collaboratively with other departments throughout Lincoln Center and with constituent organizations.
  • Manage other HR functions and activities as needed.
  • Maintain current knowledge base of industry trends, practices, and legal requirements.


  • 7 to 10 years of progressively responsible professional human resources management and labor relations experience, including at least 5 years negotiating and administering collective bargaining agreements.
  • Demonstrated expertise with union/management collaboration, grievance processing and dispute resolution.
  • Must be diplomatic and able to communicate effectively with all levels throughout the organization and with outside parties and entities.
  • Expert knowledge of employment and labor law.
  • Must be extremely efficient, organized and detail-oriented.
  • Must be able to work independently and under pressure of multiple deadlines.
  • Experience in a performing arts and/or large non-profit firm preferred.
  • Master’s degree in Human Resources, Labor Relations, or related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
