POSITION SUMMARY

 

Morehouse College’s AVP of Human Resources is a key thought partner and trusted advisor to the college’s senior leaders on all human capital matters. They will report to the Vice President, General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer. The AVP of HR directs the Office of Human Resources and provides strategic and day-to-day oversight for organizational development and institutional HR policies. The AVP of HR is responsible for other programs including employee relations, staff and leadership development, benefits, implementation of personnel policies and procedures, recruitment and orientation, payroll, faculty and staff compensation, performance management systems, compliance issues and personnel records. This position develops and manages the annual HR budget and supervises all HR staff members.

 

The AVP of HR has authority to approve health insurance claims, workers’ compensation premiums, unemployment premiums, life and supplemental insurance premiums, charge recruiting expenses to appropriate departmental accounts, and monitors institutional staff budget lines for staffing expenses. In collaboration with the CFO, this position is responsible for oversight and administration of the college’s retirement program. The position oversees the processing, tracking and analysis of employee health insurance premiums/expenses, reserve funds and fixed costs associated with the college’s self-Insured health benefits plan. This position provides oversight of various expense projections in conjunction with staff and faculty compensation planning and analyzes, forecasts, and implements annual staff and faculty salary adjustments.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Ability to lead all core areas of HR with emphasis in executive coaching, talent management, organizational design, change management, culture enhancement and demonstrated capability building HR operational excellence.
  • Proven track record of driving a positive culture change, and driving the initiatives to strengthen the culture and associate value proposition.
  • Formulate, recommend and ensure consistent implementation of human resources policies and procedures for the entire College.
  • Determine and recommend employee relations practices necessary to establish a positive employer-employee relationship and support a high level of employee morale.
  • Monitor legal and compliance risk related to the human resource function.
  • Direct the preparation of information requested or required for compliance and ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Direct a process of organizational planning that evaluates structure, job design, and staff forecasting throughout the College.
  • Establish wage and salary structure, pay policies, performance appraisal programs, employee benefit programs and services, and company safety and health programs (and monitor all programs for effectiveness and cost containment).
  • Make recommendations for substantive changes and procedure development to supervisor prior to implementation.
  • Establish standard talent acquisition, recruiting and placement practices and procedures that ensure the need of the College are met.
  • Consult with appropriate stakeholders to ensure the College has management training programs that address College needs across division lines.
  • Direct the preparation and maintenance of reports necessary to carry out functions of department and prepare periodic reports to senior management, as necessary or requested.
  • Keep supervisor informed of significant problems that jeopardize the achievement of objectives, and those which are not being addressed adequately at the line management level.
  • Provide general administration of staff directly responsible for employment, affirmative action, payroll, staff development, risk, health, and benefits management.
  • Provide procedures and standards to support administrative and supervisory personnel regarding the recruitment, selection, compensation, promotion and transfer of employees and resolve grievances.
  • Prepare budgets and control expenditures for areas of responsibility.
  • Provide joint leadership and oversight for professional development for all employees.
  • Provide employee relations supervision, and conduct where necessary, internal investigations related to discrimination and all other HR related legal complaints.

  • Strategic mindset with the ability to execute: The person will be strategic in that the AVP of HR participates in all major strategy discussions at the College. It is simultaneously a hands-on role, with expectations for both leading a team of HR professionals and “rolling up your sleeves” to work with everyone, including trustees, the president, provost, deans, vice presidents, faculty and department chairs, and staff across all academic and administrative divisions.
  • Collaborative and influential, including an ability to develop relationships easily and sees that as an essential way of working. Employees expect the senior HR professional to be visible, accessible, and approachable. In other words, someone who builds lots of trusted relationships. A high level of confidence and trust in the HR leader will be required to implement the changes coming over the next few years.
  • Technologically savvy with comfortability and experience with technology, sophisticated in the use of data, knowledgeable about process redesign, and change management experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state legislation and regulations governing human resources functions, including the Fair Labor Standards Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Title IX, EEO, Workers’ Compensation, COBRA, Family Medical Leave Act, etc.
  • Results-oriented professional who can make a difference; an individual who takes initiative, makes things happen, accepts accountability, has a "can do" attitude, and a strong sense of urgency
  • Creative and flexible in attitude and style to adapt to new situations in a rapidly changing, dynamic environment
  • Strong communication skills: oral, written, presentation, and influencing, plus the ability to communicate across all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in developing and implementing innovative human resources managementprograms.
  • Demonstratedknowledgeofandexperienceindesigningandimplementing workforce planning, human resource strategies, restructuring, process reengineering, and evaluationmethodologies.
  • Demonstratedexperienceasachangeagentimplementingorganization-wide change
  • Skillinorganizationaldevelopment,humanresourcemanagement,budgetand resource planning andexecution.

 

Required Education and Professional Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Management, Human Resources, or related area. MBA or relevant advanced degree preferred, but not required
  • Minimum of 10 years of strong generalist human resources experience across all functional disciplines with increasing levels of responsibility; at least five years of experience in managing a team of human resources professionals

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Specialized professional human resources certification (PHR or SPHR)
  • SHRM-SCP (Senior Certified Professional preferred
