Human Resources, in partnership with the University community, supports the mission of Wesleyan University by providing services and programs that attract, develop, and retain a highly qualified and diverse workforce.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer and Treasurer, the Associate Vice President for Human Resources (AVP-HR) is a key member of the Finance and Administration team that provides strategic and operational leadership and day-to-day oversight for the human resources department.

The AVP-HR will lead and supervise a team of six that has responsibility for talent management, training and development, employee and labor relations, performance management, compensation, benefits and wellness, health and welfare related risk management, compliance, human resources technology, human resources budget and employee programs for approximately one thousand employees.

Responsibilities include:


Provide strategic and organizational consultation and guidance to senior leaders on human resources issues.

Provide leadership and guidance to develop collaborative strategies that leverage workforce diversity.

Demonstrate agility and expertise in leading organizational initiatives that align with the University’s mission and goals.

Plan short term and long term human resources initiatives.

Identify needs and opportunities for change within the university and provide guidance and leadership to strategically map and execute change.

Lead the creation of data and metrics that can be used effectively for organizational health assessment, workforce planning, and recommendation or modification of policies.

Engage and advise University leadership on succession planning.


Provide subject matter expertise and guidance in all human resources areas.

Design and develop programs and systems to continually improve human resources efficiency and effectiveness.

Oversee recruitment and retention of a highly qualified and diverse workforce.

Promote employee engagement through the development of programs.

Evaluate the staff performance review and merit increase process.

Enhance employee recognition programs.

Assess and design a training and development plan to support individual career development, as well as broader University needs.

Actively advance diversity and inclusion initiatives in conjunction with the Vice President for Equity and Inclusion/Title IX Officer and other campus leaders and groups.

Lead employee investigations and collaborate with the Office of Equity and Inclusion for Title VII and Title IX investigations.

Design and manage staff compensation programs and plans.

Oversee the design, development, delivery and administration of university benefits.

Ensure requisite compliance in all areas of human resources.

Oversee the negotiation and implementation of collective bargaining contracts.

Oversee and monitor the annual human resources budget.

Collaborate with Information Technology Services to oversee human resources management systems, applicant tracking systems and human resources data.


Collaborate with University Communication on employee newsletter.

Develop strategy and calendar for strategic human resources communication.

Deliver timely, informative and critical internal communications to faculty, staff and other stakeholders.

Leverage human resources webpages and social media as a communication tool.

Develop strategies to promote Wesleyan as an employer of choice.

Develop effective and strategic relationships with staff, faculty, students, senior leaders and other key stakeholders.

Oversee management of employee relations.

Design opportunities and venues for building employee networks and relationships.


Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and at least seven years of progressively responsible human resources leadership/supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Experience with or knowledge of all human resources functional areas (talent management, labor and employee relations, training and development, compensation, benefit and wellness, performance management, risk management, compliance) and commitment to best practices.
Current knowledge of federal labor laws, rules and regulations related to all human resources areas.
Demonstrated experience with data informed decision making.
Experience with evaluating, improving and recommending processes.
Effective communication skills.
Demonstrated creative problem-solving and strategic-thinking skills.
Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact openly with individuals of different backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

Degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development or related field.
At least ten years of human resources leadership and supervisory experience strongly preferred.
Experience with varied performance review, compensation, employee engagement and retention models.
Previous experience designing and implementing training and development programs.
Demonstrated experience managing strategic communication with all constituencies.
Prior experience as an innovative change agent.
Demonstrated knowledge of Connecticut labor laws.
Experience with unions.
SPHR or SHRM-SCP Certification.
Experience implementing change.
