Benefits is responsible for administering the university’s benefit programs, including health and welfare, retirement and tuition remission benefits. Benefits Administration also conducts employee benefit orientation, education, and enrollment of all programs for new employees to GW.

This position will be responsible for planning and executing the day to day operations and transactions related to the leave, time off and absence program benefit offerings, collectively referred to as “LOA” programs. This includes but is not limited to communicating complex details in an understandable manner, providing counseling and guidance to participants and managers related to eligibility and enrollment instructions for group short-term and long-term disability, life and AD&D, as well as leaves of absence and time off. 
This position also acts as vendor liaison to identify root causes, find solutions and make corrective action recommendations to achieve customer expectations for resolution. 

This role addresses all incoming and outgoing correspondence received via telephone, the GW leave email account as well as any walk ins for LOAguidance and counseling and is expected to interpret benefits plan provisions.
This role is responsible for the managing and maintaining the data integrity of the leave database, the system of record for leaves that Benefits administers, and maintaining and improving functionality of leave Access database as well as maintaining historical in-house recordkeeping for the leave program.

Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Tracking leave status, monitoring employees’ expected return date and providing return notices which include benefits re-enrollment and returning to work procedures
  • Monitoring employees’ return to work and coordinating notification to HR partners as needed
  • Processing biweekly and monthly payroll for employees approved for GW Paid STD and Staff Paid Parental leave 
  • Managing invoicing/payment process for employees on unpaid leave lasting longer than 30 days
  • Ensuring accurate processing of benefit payments received from Payer Express (or in paper check form in EAS) and amends Banner deduction arrears
  • Presenting benefit offerings for new hires during weekly orientation program as well as Resident orientation
  • Managing Healthy Pregnancy Program
  • Managing life claims
  • Special projects as assigned

This role also provides back up to the Benefits Service Delivery Team as needed (ex. front phone line, benefits@gwu.edu, taxable tuition assistance).

Maintains a broad knowledge of university policies as well as a focus on professional development and keeps abreast of human resource trends and issues, particularly related to leave and time off areas, including any legislative or compliance requirements that may be relevant to GW.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 1 year of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.


Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in Human Resources or Benefits with specific responsibility for leave of absence administration and strong analysis and/or basic accounting skills preferred. 

Knowledge of benefits administration and practices, as well as the processes associated with administering benefits programs, plans, policies, and actions.

Knowledge and understanding of federal regulations as they apply to benefits programs and processes, as well as related to applicable state laws, along with the ability to apply that knowledge effectively to ensure compliance.

Attention to detail with a demonstrated commitment to excellence and performance improvement.

A professional presence and strong interpersonal skills for interacting in a courteous, timely, and diplomatic manner.

A customer focus, which demonstrates proactive, responsive services.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Excellent organizational skills with an appropriate sense of urgency.

Ability to work independently and as an effective team member.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office (WORDPOWERPOINTEXCELACCESS).

Ability to handle information of a confidential nature and ensure that such information is secured and maintained in an appropriate manner.
