Clayton Early Learning is a hub for Colorado’s innovative work in early childhood development.
Committed fiercely to the belief that healthy early childhood development offers one of the most
powerful levers for ending inequality, Clayton plays a leadership role in demonstrating what’s
possible in the early years and the positive impact that has for children and families over time.
Clayton’s 20 acre campus in the heart of Denver is the home of Colorado’s only Educare school, a
nationally recognized model supporting children from birth to age five and their families. We also
impact systems change in Colorado and beyond through our research and evaluation services,
professional development for teachers and leaders throughout Colorado, and policy and advocacy
work at the state and federal level. Our direct service and systems change work has impacted 20,000
children throughout Colorado.

The Opportunity

Clayton is at an exciting juncture in its history; we have new leadership and are engaging in a
strategic planning process that will build on Clayton’s wide-ranging strengths and position Clayton to
be a nationally recognized center for innovation in the field of early childhood development. The role
of Chief People Officer is an opportunity for an entrepreneurial systems-builder to help lead a large
and complex organization to lay the groundwork for this vision. We have exciting aspirations and we
need to meet our existing staff members and systems where they are and build toward the future.
With that in mind, we are seeking an executive team member who is not only highly skilled and
passionate about our mission, but one who is ready to roll up the sleeves and design systems
improvements while building on the organization’s strengths.
The CPO will join a dynamic executive team and lead the work of building and refining the systems
that will support growth, shaping the culture, and developing and managing a diverse team to reach

The Role

As a key member of the Executive Management team, the Chief People Officer will be an
innovative, visionary leader with the goal of creating a best-in-class organization that
recognizes talent as its most important resource. The significant areas of responsibility within this
position include all aspects of strategic talent management. This includes talent strategy and
philosophy, organizational culture, and all aspects of the employee life cycle, including recruitment,
on-boarding, development of competencies, performance management, succession planning, career
pathways, and total rewards.

The goal is to create an organization that attracts the best people, ensures that they are highly
engaged in the mission, work, and culture of the organization, develops them in their careers and
abilities, and maximizes their contributions. The Chief People Officer will ensure that this vision is
executed through organizational policy and practice and will work closely with the CEO and the
executive team to fully align the talent vision and systems with the overall organizational strategy and

Specific Responsibilities

Serve as a visionary leader and strategic advisor to the organization on all talent-related topics

  • Play a leadership role in shaping a high-performing, results-oriented and human-centered culture that enables all team members to thrive with the systems and structures that reinforce this culture
  • Design and implement a comprehensive talent strategy that is aligned with Clayton Early Learning’s overall vision and goals
  • Lead change management processes and ensure buy-in to the talent strategy across the organization through transparent, regular internal communication
  • Utilize regular data collection (quantitative and qualitative) to develop evidence-driven approaches
  • Ensure the existence of a positive workplace environment that supports staff engagement, work/life integration and optimum productivity and performance
  • Work with policy/advocacy team to codify and share innovative practices where they can positively impact workforce development in the field of early childhood education

Lead diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives

  • Lead diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in partnership with the CEO
  • Implement systems and ongoing training designed to build staff capacity to work consciously and effectively across lines of difference
  • Apply a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens to all job design, recruiting, staffing and transition processes and ensure that all systems support the organization’s goals in these areas
  • Ensure that Clayton Early Learning’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is reflected, not only in our internal practices, but in our programmatic work, through close collaboration with executive team members

Build and manage the organization’s employment life-cycle processes and human resources functions
with the purpose of recruiting and engaging a diverse workforce that lives our values and who
collectively will achieve our mission

  • Provide visionary leadership and skilled management to the people operations team (6-8 professionals) to design and implement an effective talent system
  • Utilizing a strategic guide such as Promise54’s Talent-Ready Organization framework, design and implement a multi-year talent plan that results in an integrated, high-quality approach to all elements of the talent life cycle including HR strategies and policies that support Clayton’s strategic goals and culture
  • Oversee the staff recruiting and selection process
  • Design and implement strategies to build the capacity of all departments to interview, hire, and retain a broadly diverse workforce
  • Develop and implement a competency-based talent system
  • Ensure that staff learning, effectiveness and development programs are best-in-class and leading to high quality manager and staff member performance
  • Manage and continually improve the organization’s performance management process
  • Oversee the organization’s total rewards policies and practices, including external benchmarking and calibration
  • Develop systems for succession planning and career pathways
  • Manage relationships with key external HR service providers, assessing performance and value received
  • Ensure compliance with employment laws and regulations
  • With the assistance of the CFO, recommend and obtain cost-effective employee benefits, and monitor national benefits environment for options and cost savings

Qualifications and Requirements

The Chief People Officer will be a results-oriented leader with superb interpersonal and
communication skills. The CPO will have at least 10 years in progressively responsible leadership
roles. Advanced degree and/or certifications and specific experience related to designing and
managing strategic talent management systems with a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens are
preferred. The ideal candidate will also have the following personal competencies and characteristics:

Experienced Talent Management and Human Resources Leader: The Chief People Officer will be
a proven leader with a strong acumen for all human resources and talent management functions. This
person will have managed a human resources team within an organization and will thrive in
collaborative environments that are seeking innovation and are deeply committed to diversity, equity
and inclusion. They will have the proven ability to establish progressive systems and structures
designed to support the development and engagement of staff and overall organizational goals. The
CPO will possess a broad base of technical knowledge and skills related to human resource
administration, including labor law, compensation management & analysis, benefits, personnel policy,
and employee relations.

Experienced Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Leader: The Chief People Officer is charged with
helping the organization to realize its vision around diversity, equity and inclusion. The Chief People
Officer will work to nurture a transparent and compassionate culture where staff feels able to bring
their full selves to work, supported and cared for both personally and professionally and able to
productively and openly engage in dialogue about power, privilege, culture and implicit bias. This
person will center equity and inclusion in the systems and policies of the organization and work with
team members to ensure that these values are not only embedded in our internal talent systems but in
our work with children and families.

Relationship Builder and Collaborator: The Chief People Officer will be skilled at building and
sustaining excellent relationships across Clayton Early Learning. The CPO will be a natural partner
with demonstrated ability to connect, build bridges and work collaboratively. The CPO will be a strong
listener and communicator who brings a calm presence, establishes credibility with many and varied
constituencies, builds consensus and engenders trust based on integrity, critical thinking, and
transparency. This person will be a culture carrier who models passion for the mission, a respect for
people and a commitment to moving the organization forward. Through leadership and example, this
person will position the organization and team as a trusted, solutions-oriented source of support for all

Results-oriented Manager : The CPO will inspire others to work together to achieve a common
purpose, and will be an effective leader on the executive team. The CPO will be skilled in motivating
teams to produce quality materials within tight time frames and simultaneously manage multiple
projects. The CPO will have experience recruiting and retaining high performing team members as
well as providing professional development opportunities to strengthen interpersonal and
organizational growth. The CPO will ensure goals and ownership of objectives and key results are
clearly delineated and lead the team to accomplish these goals.

Strategic Thinker and Problem Solver: The Chief People Officer will be a strategic partner to the
CEO and Board of Trustees in developing and implementing a strategic plan. The CPO will be skilled
in the design and implementation of strategic initiatives and a strong track record of effective change
management. The CPO must be comfortable anticipating problems and developing proactive
solutions, particularly when there may be no available precedents, guidelines, or policies. As such, the
CPO must have a track record of success in devising innovative solutions and creative problem
solving by drawing upon experience, research on best practices, and outreach to colleagues.

Adept Change Manager: The Chief People Officer will bring a background of managing significant
organizational change and staff development, maintaining perspective on the impacts of these
changes on the culture of an organization. They will have practical experience in communicating
change to executive leadership and staff within the organization.

Passion for the Mission: The Chief People Officer must be passionate about the role of early
learning in human and community development and Clayton’s potential for impact on the local and
national front.

Modeling Organization Values: The Chief People Officer is a values-driven, results-oriented leader.
Emotional intelligence, humility, and self-awareness will be necessary to foster collaborative
leadership. The CPO understands, values, and promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion. The CPO
must have a track record of sound judgment, uncompromising ethical standards, a high level of
personal integrity, and the ability to handle confidential matters with discretion. Finally, the team is
building a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and excellence while modeling how the
combination of high performance, joy, and human connection make Clayton a great place to work.
