Director of Human Resources, US East-West Province



The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur (SNDdeN) arean international congregation of women religious committed to making known God’s goodness and educating for life. The US East-West Province Director of Human Resources performs all necessary Human Resources functions, including the implementation of employment policies and procedures, compensation management, employee benefits, recruitment, state and federal compliance, and employee relations. The Director of Human Resources serves as a resource to the employees and as an adviser to the US East-West Leadership Team. This position will serve employees in several states and locations. Some travel is required.


  • Develop and implement employee personnel policies and procedures that meet state and federal labor laws, proposing adjustments or changes to the US East-West Leadership Team for approval
  • Assist with recruiting through job postings, résumé screening, interview coordinating, and needed communication
  • Conduct periodic compensation surveys; compile reported data for salary evaluation; review current salary structures. Periodically review job descriptions for accuracy and appropriateness.   Initiate a performance management process and conduct exit interviews. Offer proposals regarding compensation to the US East-West Province Leadership Team for approval.
  • Administer employee benefits, periodically reviewing current benefits and benefit vendors for approval by the US East-West Province Leadership Team
  • Organize training and in-service workshops for managers, supervisors, and department heads
  • Provide employee safety education and new employee orientation
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local legal employment requirements by being knowledgeable of existing and new legislation in each employee location; assure adherence to legal requirements
  • Work with the organization’s employment attorney on legal matters, as needed
  • Support the Province Leadership Team by providing human resources advice, counsel, and recommendations on personnel issues
  • Maintain organized manual and electronic documents, files, and records related to Human Resources for providing accurate information in compliance with regulatory requirements and organizational guidelines
  • Prepare department budget for approval and monitor department expenditures
  • Collaborate with payroll administration to ensure accurate and timely employee-related payroll data
  • Participate in Human Resources conferences and educational opportunities; maintain memberships in professional organizations
  • Work in collaboration with the Human Resources Manager for the Notre Dame Training School Corporation
  • Perform other related duties, as required or assigned





  • Master’s Degree in Human Resources and/or SPHR Certification
  • Ten years of progressively responsible experience in Human Resources management, particularly for nonprofit and/or religious organizations.   Supervisory experience required.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn and understand the nature of religious life and the spirit and mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur
  • Ability to gain proficiency in the internal language, charism, and mission of the Catholic Church, religious life, and the religious institute
  • Knowledge and experience in computer operations and proficiency in Microsoft Office software
  • Ability to produce, edit, format, and complete professional documents
  • Attention to details and accuracy
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Ability to communicate and explain Human Resources issues in understandable terms
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with others
  • Ability to cope with a variety of personalities and other stress provoking factors associated with a broad base of people, time constraints, and the responsibilities of the position
  • Initiative and self-direction
  • Ability to function in a changing environment
  • Ability to establish and rearrange priorities
  • Ability to recognize problem situations and to act to prevent adverse reactions
