POSITION DESCRIPTION

Westtown School, a diverse PK-12 day and boarding Quaker school located in beautiful Chester County, Pennsylvania, seeks a Director of Human Resources (HR).  Reporting to the Dean of Finance and Operations, the Director will oversee the HR office and will guide and manage employment-related services, policies, and programs for the entire School.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Recruitment
Partner with division and department heads at the School to build and maintain a deep pool of excellent candidates for teaching and staff positions. 

  • Help attract strong, diverse, mission-aligned candidates by developing superior job postings and publishing them in the most advantageous locations;

  • Facilitate communication throughout the hiring process, and maintain efficient, thorough internal procedures;

  • Ensure the hiring process yields the most competitive applicants;

  • Deliver an onboarding process to new employees that is timely, informative, smooth, and welcoming.

Retention and Employee Community Support
Help create a positive work environment and strengthen employees’ commitment to the School.

  • Foster a culture of respect, inclusion, and compassion to build support for an increasingly diverse workplace;

  • Develop and communicate clear job descriptions and appropriate position classifications;

  • Work with division and department heads to provide staff and faculty with appropriate performance evaluations, support, and professional development opportunities.

HR Operations
Oversee day-to-day HR operations in an effective and efficient manner with a focus on excellent customer service.

  • Participate in the School’s overall annual HR planning process to prioritize and budget human capital needs;

  • Manage the HR department resources, and develop and manage the HR department budget based on the School’s priorities;

  • Manage key documentation including offer letters and contracts;

  • Author and implement employment-related processes including hiring, salary adjustments, performance reviews, and terminations.
     

Compensation and Benefits
Administer current compensation and benefits strategy, and provide ongoing consultation on how to stay competitive in the market.

  • Manage the payroll and timekeeping process across campus, including compliance matters related to the FLSA and DOL;

  • Serve as the School’s “Benefits Administrator” and as primary School contact with the PAISBOA HBT, brokers, and benefit vendors.

Employee Relations
Maintain policies and procedures and partner with managers to resolve disputes and performance issues among their reports.  

  • Maintain clear policies regarding community standards, and facilitate prompt, fair, and thorough processes to resolve conduct issues and interpersonal conflicts;

  • Participate in consultations with the School’s outside employment attorney;

  • Partner with supervisors to identify under-performance issues and assist in creating improvement plans or exit strategies accordingly.

Safety and Risk Management
Support workplace safety and participate in risk improvement planning. 

  • Manage the School’s workers compensation issues;

  • Participate as an active and engaged member of the Safety Committee;

  • Ensure employees are current with required and baseline training such as mandatory reporting, anti-harassment, and CPR.

Compliance
Ensure that employee policies, including grievance and dispute resolution procedures, are accurate, up to date, and reflect the core values and mission of the School.

  • Ensure clearances are properly processed and maintained for all employees and volunteers;
  • Protect the interests of the School by complying with applicable governmental laws and regulations.

Requirements

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field;

  • PHR/SPHR highly desirable;

  • Ten years of progressively responsible generalist experience;

  • Five years of supervisory experience.

  • Develop and implement solutions that are grounded in facts, not emotions, while still being empathetic;

  • Facilitate best practices and policies;
     
  • Comfortably manage conflict and be direct.
