Steptoe, an Am Law 100 law firm located in the heart of Dupont Circle has an amazing opportunity to lead its legal recruiting and professional development team. The Director of Legal Recruiting & Professional Development, based in DC, is highly visible role which involves interface with firm leadership including the Executive Committee, Chairs and Co-Chairs of Diversity and Inclusion Committee, Hiring Committee(s) Professional Development and Training Committees, and administrative department/office leaders.  The position will carry out the firm’s strategic initiatives with a heavy emphasis on attorney professional development and training. The role requires a highly organized, innovative, engaged leader with strong client service orientation, diplomacy, excellent written/verbal communication skills along with ability to manage in a collaborative environment.  

 

This position is also responsible for the following:

 

  • Oversight of attracting and retaining talented and diverse lawyers. Includes recruiting law school and lateral hires at all levels, onboarding, integration and alumni relations.
  • Oversight of the development, execution, and reporting on Diversity & Inclusion initiatives to advance the firm’s commitment to the overall program.

  • Manage and oversee attorney training and development, continuing legal education (CLE), mentoring, program curriculums and other related functions.

  • Oversight of performance management system and career progression for Associates, Counsel, Contract Attorneys and other professionals.

  • Lead department operations to include policy definition, budget, innovative workflow process, project management, metrics, and market awareness.

 

Qualified candidates will possess the following:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree is required. JD or advanced degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of legal administration is required.

  • A minimum of 5 years of attorney professional development/recruiting experience is required.

  • Proven track record of effectively leading a team of exempt and non-exempt staff.

 

Keys to Success in this role:

 

  • Comprehensive knowledge of attorney professional development, core competencies, adult learning concepts, program design and attorney career progression.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current attorney recruiting trends in the Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. markets.

  • Ability to lead a team in a client service driven environment.
