In 1998, FirstLine Schools started the first charter school in New Orleans. FirstLine now operates four K-8th grade schools and a high school.  Our mission is to create and inspire great open admissions public schools in New Orleans. We do this by:

Position Summary:

The Director of Talent will ensure the recruiting, development, and retention of highly skilled and aligned teachers, school leaders, and staff to develop and operate outstanding schools. The Director of Talent should aspire to create an organization that is defined by the network’s core values:  service, learning, collaboration, results, and fun. 


The Director of Talent Management will do this by managing all aspects of talent management for the organization:

  • Job design
  • Performance management systems
  • Recognition and retention strategies
  • Compensation strategies (in collaboration with the Human Resources Manager)
  • Workforce planning and budgeting (in conjunction with the executive team and school leaders)
  • Recruitment and Selection (in collaboration with Recruitment Manager)  


Position Responsibilities:

The Director of Talent assumes leadership and management responsibilities for the development, implementation, and on-going refinement of systems and practice in each of the areas below:


Job Design

  • Creates job descriptions for each position that outline key competencies and responsibilities
  • Creates organization charts and consultation structures


Recruitment & Selection

Working with and managing the Recruitment Manager, the Director of Talent Management:

  • Ensures effective attraction strategies for all positions.  Such strategies include print and online materials, information sessions, and local and national recruiting practices
  • Ensures effective assessment and selection practices for all positions, including linking selection data to performance data to gauge and refine all assessment tools
  • Trains and supports leaders to successfully attract, select and retain talent

Performance Management

Working with and managing the Talent Manager, the Director of Talent Management:

  • Ensures overall organizational approach to performance management that is both developmental and ensures accountability
  • Trains and supports leaders to become effective at managing performance
  • Oversees tracking and reporting systems for performance management

Recognition Strategies

  • Develops strategies to recognize employee accomplishments and behaviors aligned with successful outcomes and organizational approach
  • Works with school senior and middle leaders to increase their effectiveness at employee recognition


  • Develops staff career ladder and employee reward strategies to ensure compensation system is competitive and effectively retains strong staff and promotes organizational goals

Succession Planning

  • Works with school and network leaders on succession plans and associated professional development and systems documentation for all leadership positions in the network

Workforce Planning and Budgeting

  • Supports network and school leadership in planning short and long-term staffing models within anticipated budget parameters and informs annual and 3-year budgeting cycles

Other duties as assigned

Physical Requirements:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear.
  •  Light lifting of equipment may be required (up to 20 lbs.)


DIRECTOR OF TALENT reports to: Director of Operations

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. FirstLine Schools offers a comprehensive benefits package with a generous 403b plan.

Education & Experience:

  • BA; MA in education, business or management preferred
  • Teaching experience in a non-selective urban school preferred but not required
  • 5-10 years leading and managing programs and staff; experience leading in a consultative environment preferred
  • Demonstrated success in recruiting and selecting, preferably in the education sector
  • Demonstrated success developing and managing training programs and program evaluation
