The Division of Research and Faculty Development (DRFD) at Harvard Business School (HBS) has a unique opportunity for an experienced human resources professional who is interested in being a business partner within the organization. In this role, you will support the work of the managers and staff who directly support the teaching, research and administrative activities of the HBS faculty. While reporting directly to the senior leadership of the DRFD, the Director, Organizational Operations will work closely with colleagues within the Division, in HBS HR, and elsewhere across the School to advance the goals of the DRFD and the mission of HBS

As the Director of Organizational Operations, you will …

  • Develop a people culture strategy for the DRFD and engage with senior leadership to build a healthy, fulfilling and inspiring workplace experience for our team
  • Identify new opportunities where an HR perspective can add value to the business objectives of the team
  • Bring a strategic viewpoint to recruiting activities promoting an approach that attracts, develops and supports a diverse workforce with the unique skillset required to support the Division's work
  • Unify the Division's HR efforts around the goal of optimizing staff development and retention, developing strategies around investing in managers to become the best managers they can be and nurturing staff at all levels – setting the conditions for each person to thrive and do their best work in service of the School's mission
  • Conceive of and implement new programs and initiatives that address organizational effectiveness and workforce development
  • Provide thought-leadership, advising, coaching, consulting on talent management and organization design to optimize the Division's service delivery capabilities with a focus on creating an environment of engagement for staff
  • Understand and facilitate change management and organization development strategies
  • Ensure that a strong leadership and coaching culture cascades through the Division
  • Manage day-to-day HR operations within the DRFD, actively partnering with HBS HR and DRFD managers on the complete spectrum of human resource management activities including staffing, organization design, staff relations, compensation, on-boarding, training and development, retention, succession planning, rewards and recognition, and performance management. Track HR data and analytics to inform strategic decision making
  • Oversee and manage performance management programs such as the rewards and recognition program and variable pay program identifying, encouraging and facilitating opportunities to recognize staff for outstanding contributions
  • Serve as a member of the Division budget team, contributing to the strategic decision making around administrative budget requests in an environment where human capital represents 90% of administrative costs
  • Collaborate and partner with the HBS HR Team to understand their goals and initiatives and incorporate and communicate them throughout the Division


Basic Qualifications:

10+ years of experience leading HR activities or serving as a HR business partner in a complex service organization is required. BA/BS required

And bring the following experience…

  • Master's degree or JD strongly preferred
  • Strong customer service, interpersonal, organizational, analytical, human resource management, and communication skills necessary.
  • Strong business knowledge and judgment, connecting human resources practices with business objectives and needs
  • Experience managing staff, with extensive involvement in people management issues
  • Proven ability to provide advice and counsel across a complex organization. Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with all levels of staff
  • Detail-oriented, organized, responsive, ability to multi-task and proven planning and project management skills
  • Human resources certification preferred.
