AIG’s Global Legal, Compliance, Regulatory and Government Affairs (GLCR) department is comprised of attorneys and other professionals providing high quality advisory and transactional support with integrity and objectivity across all parts of the organization. We are seeking an ERISA & Employee Benefit Specialist  to join our legal team.


Description –


Job functions will include, but not be limited to –


  • Preparing and/or reviewing materials for government filings, especially Form 5500s related to the employee benefit plans

  • Assisting with the appeals processes for the Medical Plan (including attending and drafting minutes of meetings of appeal committees, and reviewing appeal decision letters to employees)

  • Providing support in connection with merger, sale and acquisition business transactions (including working with data room due diligence files)

  • Coordinating the processing of and/or responses to subpoenas, garnishments and powers of attorney

  • Researching ERISA, IRC, IRS and DOL compliance questions

  • Maintaining and updating well-organized inventory of plan documents, plan amendments and important filings and communications

  • Working on recurrent annual projects (examples: FBAR filing, IRC Section 409A “specified employees”/ “top 50” list);

  • Preparing basic retirement plan and welfare plan amendments for attorney review

  • Responding to issues in connection with QDROs and QMCSOs

  • Managing and completing assignments relating to privacy protections, including HIPAA compliance, within the Company’s human resource operations

  • Supporting in-house and outside counsel on gathering information or documents for litigation matters related to the employee benefit plans (particularly, gathering data for foreign class actions on behalf of the Retirement Plan)



Requirements -


  • The ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree

  • At least 3 to 5 years of experience as a Benefits professional or ERISA Paralegal

  • Must have excellent writing, communication and organizational skills, must be very detailed-oriented and efficient, and will be expected to coordinate large, multifaceted projects with a minimum of supervision.

  • Should have a strong working knowledge of the general plan qualification rules under IRC Section 401 and ERISA.

  • Proficiency in Checkpoint, Lexis or Westlaw, or a willingness and aptitude to be trained on conducting research in those databases important.

  • Familiarity with global HR privacy and HIPAA concerns desirable.

  • Certifications including CEBS and/or HIPAA Privacy Officer training a plus

  • This position requires a high degree of independent analysis and judgment, as well as the ability to work directly with a wide variety of outside counsel, corporate legal staff, compliance staff, and business unit personnel. The successful candidate will be motivated to expand existing knowledge into related areas, and anxious to devote the time to develop a high degree of specialization.
