Human Resources and Volunteer Services Manager

The Human Resources and Volunteer Services Manager maintains and enhances the school’s human resources by planning, implementing, and evaluating employee relations and human resources policies, programs, practices, and volunteer coordination. He/she will work with the senior leadership team in strategic decision making and operations as the Folk School continues to enhance its quality programming and build long-range sustainable plans. 

Position Responsibilities

• Under the direction of the Executive Director, develops, implements, and updates personnel policies, procedures, and forms. Stays current with laws and regulations affecting personnel issues, employment practices or trends and recommends new or revised policies and procedures as appropriate

• Assists and supports area managers and all employees regarding personnel issues. Answers employee questions regarding personnel policies, procedures, and benefits; researches and disseminates topical or timely information to managers and/or employees on personnel issues

• Coordinates and assists with employee recruitment, hiring, orientation, and training; determines employee classifications and ensures completion of all appropriate paperwork for new employees

• Conducts recruitment effort for all exempt, nonexempt and temporary workers; writes and places advertisements; works with supervisors to screen and interview candidates; conducts reference checking; extends job offers; conducts new-employee orientations; monitors career-path program and employee relations counseling; conducts exit interviews

• Coordinates and assists supervisors with annual employee reviews and performance appraisals

• Coordinates and participates in completion of terminations and exit interviews • Establishes and maintains personnel records and reports; maintains company organization charts and employee directory

• Prepares and coordinates all accident reports and worker’s compensation reports. Handles follow-up insurance and worker’s compensation claims

• Implements and annually updates the compensation program; rewrites job descriptions as necessary; conducts salary surveys and develops merit pool; analyzes compensation; monitors the performance evaluation program and revises as necessary

• Develops, recommends and implements personnel policies and procedures; prepares and maintains handbook on policies and procedures

• Performs other related duties as required or as assigned

Volunteer Coordination • Research and write volunteer policies and procedures, including risk assessments

• Generate appropriate volunteering opportunities and role descriptions based on the needs of the school; raise staff awareness of the role and the function of volunteers

• Promote volunteering (internally and externally) through recruitment and publicity strategies and campaigns

• Interview and recruit volunteers and ensure they are appropriately matched and trained for a position • Positive, enthusiastic, professional image in representing the school, both internally and externally

• Celebrate volunteering by organizing celebration events

• Maintain databases and undertake any other administrative duties Work Study Coordination

• Manage work-study application and selection processes

• Establishes standards and procedures for work study students

• Coordinates work-study duties and schedules with appropriate area supervisors to ensure efficient and effective use of work-study student time

• Works with the ED to resolve any problems which may impact the performance of work-study students

• Leads work-study orientation sessions at the beginning of each work study session

• Coordinate special career development programming for work study students and host students

• Periodically inspects work study housing and manages work study housing needs



• Bachelor’s degree in business or HR related field preferred

• 3-5 years’ as a HR Generalist

• Knowledge of benefits laws and regulations

• Must be able to work independently and be self-motivated

• Flexible schedule and willing to work nights and weekends when needed

• Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders

• Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication to the mission of the Folk School

• SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP Preferred

Physical Demands:

The position requires that the employee be able to walk unaided up and down hills and over uneven terrain, bend, stoop, and have use of fine and gross motor skills. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and to work at a computer. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects, tools, or controls and to talk fluently. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move heavy boxes.
