Human Resources Director, Wauwatosa, WI (pop. 47,000), a dynamic inner-ring suburb of Milwaukee located on the banks of the Menomonee River and home to Milwaukee County’s Regional Medical Center, Milwaukee County Research Park, and the Mayfair Mall and Mayfair Collection, seeks an experienced, progressive human resources leader to serve as the City’s next Human Resources Director.

The City of Wauwatosa Human Resources Director leads a team of five employees and is responsible for all human resources, benefit administration and payroll functions for the City’s 450 employees. The Human Resources Director is one of 13 Department Directors, reports to the City Administrator, and is a key member of the strategic leadership team at the city. Wauwatosa has 16 aldermanic elected officials and a mayor elected at large. Responsible for the administration of two union contracts affecting approximately 200 employees.


Over the past few years, the city established the following key initiatives that the new director will be responsible with fully implementing:

  • an award-winning program in employee wellness, including the opening of an employee clinic in 2016.
  • an innovative employee professional development program called “Invest in People”.
  • a competency based performance management program that includes a performance pay system connected with a performance management system.

The next Human Resources Director will be expected to continue the focus on employee engagement, coaching, talent management and development. The next Director must be skilled in current organizational development concepts as well as typical human resources and payroll operational functions. The next Director will also be instrumental in implementing a new HR/Payroll system and improving internal processes and departmental access to data. The director will lead these strategic initiatives while also assisting with day-to-day work in the human resources department.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication and customer service skills and significant career success in building collaborative, effective relationships across departments. Additional experience in strategic planning, project management and complex problem solving with the ability to work effectively in a wide variety of governmental disciplines is important. Experience with Civil Service Systems and collective bargaining is a plus. Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in human resources management, public policy, business or related field, plus 7-10 years progressively responsible experience leading and administering progressive human resources functions in an organization comparable in size and complexity to the City of Wauwatosa. A master’s degree in human resources, organizational development or a related discipline is highly valued. In addition, certification as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR); SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP is desirable.

Starting salary is $105,000 +/- DOQ, with excellent benefits.
