Human Resources Generalist

Position Summary:

The Human Resources Generalist serves as the HR Department’s primary point person for recruitment and hiring of employees and works closely with the Director of Human Resources to support the areas of Employee Relations, Title IX / Sexual Harassment & Misconduct investigations, and Risk Management. This position works collaboratively as part of a Human Resources team that emphasizes cross-training in multiple functional areas of HR.



Duties & Responsibilities:

 


Searches:

 

  • Collect, review, and process hiring request forms for new and replacement positions

  • Work closely with hiring managers to develop effective job postings for approved positions

  • Advertise open positions, utilizing a wide variety of advertising mediums, sites, and strategies

  • Set up searches in electronic database for access by search committees and hiring managers

  • Advise search committees regarding search processes, legal considerations related to hiring/searches, and effective interviewing tools and techniques

  • Communicate with supervisors and employees regarding applicable policies, procedures, and legal requirements related to searches

  • Stay abreast of best practices and creative ways to increase diversity hiring and make recommendations on new strategies

  • Maintain accurate records regarding searches, hiring processes, and hires

  • Process and review search-related expenses, including advertising expenses, costs associated with bring candidates to campus for interviews, and moving expenses as applicable

  • Coordinate the hiring process for any temporary employees, including seasonal positions, temporary agency placements, etc.

  • Coordinate the onboarding of volunteers, including collection of volunteer request forms, volunteer paperwork, and background checks as applicable

  • Process and maintain records for background checks, including Act 153 clearances as applicable

  • Schedule and review results for pre-employment drug screens

  • Coordinate and process moving expenses for eligible new hires

  • Ensure all positions have up-to-date job descriptions

 

 

 

Employee Relations:

 

  • Conduct feedback portion of exit interviews

  • Conduct personnel investigations as assigned

  • Assist with the coordination of the annual performance review process

 

 

 

Title IX / Sexual Harassment & Misconduct:

 

  • Conduct Title IX investigations involving students and/or employees as assigned

  • Maintain Title IX files

  • Maintain tracking record of Title IX complaints and cases

 

 

 

Risk Management / Compliance:

 

  • Request certificates of insurance from insurance carriers

  • File vehicle accident reports

  • Assist with renewal processes for liability insurances, including gathering information, completing forms, and meeting deadlines for submission

 

 

 

Miscellaneous:

 

  • Filing of employment paperwork

  • Participate in the development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, and processes, recommending ideas for continual improvement in systems and procedures

  • Assist in the planning, coordination, and implementation of employee recognition events and initiatives, including: annual ham/turkey for non-exempt staff, annual holiday luncheon for faculty and staff, Staff Appreciation Day, other events as determined

 

  • Other duties as assigned

 

 

 

Back-Up Responsibilities:

 

  • Serve as the primary back-up for the following areas of responsibility:

    • Compensation

    • Benefits administration

    • Director of Human Resources


Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • PHR, SHRM-CP, or other relevant human resources certification preferred

  • Minimum of three years of applicable human resources experience in the areas of recruitment/hiring and employee relations or investigations

 

Skills:

  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills

  • Working knowledge of Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) and Applicant Tracking Systems

  • Ability to conduct unbiased and detailed investigations and write investigatory reports

  • Strong reasoning and judgement

  • Customer-service attitude

  • Strong initiative and self-motivation, ownership of work

  • Attention to detail

  • Ability to work well as part of a team; values collaboration and communication

  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities
