The City of Takoma Park is seeking a part-time Human Resources Intern in order to provide day-to-day support of assigned HR functions, programs and activities. The incumbent will focus their efforts on a number of aspects within HR including talent acquisition, benefit administration, payroll, HRIS, file compliance, as well as other areas of the field. This is a great opportunity for those who are seeking exposure to a career touching many facets of HR. This part-time position is not subject to membership in the AFSCME union. There is one opening for this position with an hourly rate of $14 to $17 commensurate upon educational experience. Internships with the City of Takoma Park, Maryland can last up to one year.  

Typical Duties:

  • Helps maintain personnel files in compliance with federal, state and local laws
  • Assists in maintenance of employee databases and associated records; tracks data in spreadsheets as needed
  • Assists with reporting, gathering and tracking data to evaluate trends
  • Supports employee benefits administration through the collection of forms and documents
  • Assists and coordinates talent acquisition operations; processes screenings and reference checks; and prepares offer letters
  • Maintains compliance with FMLA, FLSA, HIPAA, ACA and other state and local employment laws
  • Provides and assists employees on a day-to-day basis providing exceptional customer service 
  • Supports special projects as assigned

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the Junior and Senior level coursework associated with a baccalaureate degree in Human Resources or other relevant field; or
  • Recent graduate (no more than 2 years) with a baccalaureate degree in a relevant field; or
  • Any combination of education, training and experience which provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job
  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work independently and under strict deadlines

 

Highly qualified candidates will possess the following:

  • Experience providing customer service 
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills
  • High level of attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in verbal and written communication
