The Human Resource Specialist is responsible for performing HR related duties on a professional level and working closely with the Regional HR Director, Store Management, General Office HR team members, and field employees in supporting the designated geographic region.

This position may carry out responsibilities in some or all of the following functional areas: employee relations, employment law compliance, investigations, recruitment/employment, compliance audits, training, coaching and providing HR recommendations and services to management and employees.

Demonstrates high integrity, ethical practices, and maintains confidentiality with sensitive information. Acts as an integral member of the Human Resource team, supporting the Regional Human Resource Directors and other members of the Human Resource team when required. Consistently provides world class customer service to internal and external customers. Performs other related work.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

Assists and counsels store management, distribution center management, and office management in interpreting and applying company policies and CBAs (Collective Bargaining Agreements) regarding employee-related concerns, issuing discipline, conducting terminations, and compliance with state/federal employment law (e.g., Title VII, illegal harassment or discrimination, ADAAA accommodation, I-9 compliance, etc).

Demonstrates high integrity, ethical practices, and maintains confidentiality with sensitive information.

Provides guidance to management when conducting investigations pertaining to alleged violations of company polices, and assists in those investigations when appropriate.

Provides consistent recommendations to management regarding compliance with company policy and issuing disciplinary action.

Develops strong partnerships with all levels of the organization including: General Office, retail employees, store management, and regional supervisors. Maintains and models positive rapport with co-workers, supervisors, vendors, customers, and others.

Works cooperatively with the HR team in investigating employee complaints and other matters, and provides appropriate recommendations and advice to management.

Reviews customer complaints regarding employee conduct and/or professionalism, and makes recommendations to local management to investigate and address the report. Reviews weekly termination reports and provides coaching and recommendations to management, as needed.

Conducts compliance audits.

Promotes WinCo’s philosophies and values, ensures quality in all areas, and encourages teamwork by providing support in the HR department and throughout the organization.

Cultivates effective professional relationships with internal and external customers. Seeks opportunities to welcome, engage, serve, and thank customers. Maintains and encourages an atmosphere of friendly, enthusiastic customer service with an emphasis on taking care of the customer. Provides exceptional customer service by telephone, e-mail, and in person.

Provides support and assistance to the Legal Department in preparation for investigating and responding to charges/inquiries from government agencies such as EEOC, DFEH, BOLI, etc.

Provides support and assistance for the Legal Department, outside counsel, and consultants in preparation for litigation and for compliance with employment-related rules, regulations, and laws of various state and federal governmental agencies.

Provides support and assistance to the Protected Leave Department pertaining to ADA requests for accommodation, engaging in the interactive process with employee(s), advising employees and managers on FMLA and other state and federal leave protections, and working with WinCo Foods management regarding on-the-job accommodations and FMLA requests, as needed.

Completes HR-related projects, training, reports, and support.

Administers EOS (Employee Opinion Surveys), as needed.

Assists with recruitment activities, as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned or needed.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources (or related field) or equivalent experience.

Experience:

At least two (2) years in a Human Resource Specialist position, or similar role, with responsibility for professionally addressing difficult, sometimes angry individuals.

Conducting basic research, analyzing data, and preparing recommendations.

Demonstrating initiative and self-direction to perform a variety of simultaneous skills (multi-tasking).

Accepting direction from multiple sources and effectively managing time to ensure deadlines are met.

Maintaining a high degree of confidentiality with sensitive information.

Establishing and maintaining good rapport with co-workers, supervisors, vendors, customers and others.

Demonstrating a professional level of confidentiality handing sensitive applicant, employee and company information.

Demonstrating proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.) software.

Developing and maintaining effective relationships with team members, managers and employees.

In a role requiring a high level of organization and attention to detail.

Ability to:

Collect data, analyze information and use sound reasoning and decision-making skills based on the data.

Maintain highly confidential information securely and without disclosure to unauthorized parties.

Consistently provide world-class customer service to internal and external customers.

Communicate clearly and professionally, utilizing excellent verbal, written and inter-personal communication skills.

Travel overnight, as needed; and, travel within geographic region on a regular basis.

Sit and twist upper body for extended periods of time.

Use both hands repetitively for extended periods of time.

Additional Requirements:

Valid Driver’s License and acceptable Department of Motor Vehicles driving record.

Machines and Equipment Operated:

Office machines (multi-line telephone, computer terminal, copier/scanner, 10-key, fax machine, laptop, cell phone, etc.).

Preferred Education, Experience and/or Credentials:

Five (5) or more years in a Human Resource Specialist position, or similar role, with responsibility for professionally addressing difficult, sometimes angry individuals.

PHR/SPHR and SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP certifications.
