K&W Cafeterias is an 80-year old North Carolina based restaurant chain best known for their cafeteria style dining, diverse menu, and customer centric approach. With 29 locations and 2,000 employees throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia, K&W is family-owned and operated. K&W plans to remain a nostalgic family brand, while focusing on growing the catering portion of the business, as well as developing new ideas and concepts for existing store locations.


The Director of Human Resources must be a self-motivated project leader who can work well with and get the most from his/her team members. This will be a strategic level position, working in parallel with other members of the Executive Leadership Team to maximize performance across the organization. The Director of Human Resources will continue to provide advice and council to all levels of management and, when necessary to the hourly staff, regarding policies, procedures, employee benefits, and overall employee relations. In addition, the Director of Human Resources will be responsible for implementing, enforcing, and administering federal and state regulations as well as all corporate policies and procedures.


Primary Roles and Responsibilities


  • Organizational Development & Training: Optimize and manage the emerging employee engagement and development tools, leveraging the appropriate technology to promote learning. Develop initiatives related to management training, succession planning, career progression, coaching, etc.


  • Talent Acquisition & Onboarding: Contribute to long-term goals around business and people development, including succession planning and talent acquisition. Assist individual store locations with recruiting hourly workforce as well as management. Implement and leverage the appropriate technology to efficiently screen applicants. Help the company attract a high caliber hourly workforce to improve the company image and reduce turnover.


  • Performance Management: Introduce, lead, and influence change management initiatives with all levels of management staff to address topics that will enhance overall performance and compliance. Institute regular performance reviews for corporate personnel and senior leadership.


  • Employee Relations: Consistently maintain favorable and effective relations among employees. Accountable for motivating and stimulating supervisors and managers to ensure consistent, equal and fair treatment of all employees and strive to have all levels of management act with accountability and integrity. Mediate, counsel, and facilitate disputes between employees and their managers. Provide proactive supervision, guidance, and counsel to members of the human resources department.


  • Compensation & Benefits: Lead the human resources and payroll departments and be responsible for the strategy and implementation of all policies, procedures, and programs relating to personnel and payroll. Overall responsibility and oversight of all corporate benefits and services including, but not limited to: health care plans and compliance with ACA, life and disability insurance, 401(k) plans, leave management and benefits, award programs (i.e. service awards, employee recognition, etc.), relationships with all benefit brokers and providers. Assess the management compensation plan and advise on its effectiveness.


  • HR Systems & Technology: Responsible for selecting and implementing new HR systems and technology, including, but not limited, to payroll software, performance management software, and learning management systems.


INTERFACES WITH: The Sr. Director of Human Resources will report directly to the President/CEO and will be a member of the Executive Leadership Team. The Sr. Director of Human Resources will work cross-functionally with senior leaders throughout the organization. He/She will manage a team of direct reports in the human resources department, and will maintain close relationships with district managers, store managers, and field employees.





1) Human Resources Leadership Experience: The successful candidate will have at least 10 years of relevant experience in a human resources leadership role, with increasing level of responsibility.


2) Relevant Business Experience: The successful candidate will have experience working in a similar business whose workforce is comprised primarily of field-based hourly employees.


3) Organizational Development & Training: The successful candidate will have experience developing talent at all levels through succession planning and robust training initiatives.


4) Talent Acquisition & Onboarding: The successful candidate will have experience building teams, attracting top talent, and onboarding new employees effectively.


5) Performance Management: The successful candidate will have experience developing and implementing performance management programs across the organization.


6) Change Management Experience: The successful candidate will have significant experience leading, implementing, and managing change initiatives throughout the organization, including location-specific as well as company-wide initiatives.


7) HR Technology Experience: The successful candidate will have significant experience selecting, implementing, and leveraging appropriate HR systems and technology. This should include technology for payroll and benefits, learning and development, talent acquisition and onboarding, and performance management.

8) Communication & Presence: The successful candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization, from hourly employees to the Executive Leadership Team.


9) Cultural Fit: The successful candidate will align with the company’s family values, will display a high EQ, and will have a strong track record of success.


10) Education Requirements: The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree from a top-tier educational institution. Degree in human resources or related field of study is preferred, but not required.


PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS: The candidate selected for this position will be a creative, out-of-the-box thinker who is intellectually curious with a demonstrated interest in learning. This person will also need to be a self-motivated, high-energy individual who can easily function in a high demand, performance-driven environment. He/she must be accustomed to working on multiple tasks in parallel. This professional must demonstrate strong leadership skills, best demonstrated by the individual’s ability to gain credibility with team members and senior management.
